Phillips Contribution
Phillips was contracted to help develop a plot of land for an industrial manufacturing facility. The work included a mass excavation to accommodate the facility's extensive scrap metal processing equipment, which required foundations 40 feet below the existing ground surface and a tower that stood multiple stories above.
The site preparations occurred both prior to and during the construction of the facilities. Phillips coordinated with several other contractors, engineers, and owner representatives to ensure the approach to the work was safe and productive.
The work began in April 2019, ahead of Florida’s wet season, which brought rain, thunder, and lightning as a daily occurrence. The deep mass excavation also had to be coordinated with the dewatering of the site, the installation of storm drains, the construction of laydown areas, and maintaining access for all other contractors on site.
Crews had to construct roads to allow a 200-ton crawler crane to reach the perimeter of the mass excavation, where multiple pre-cast structures weighing 150 tons were to be placed by mid-July 2019. Additionally, portions of the project were constructed adjacent to an operating high-pressure natural gas pipeline.
